How to Say the Rosary in Latin (Part 2)

June 04, 2017

Hey y'all!

Second Latin lesson! This time, I'll do the Apostle's Creed, The Fatima Prayer and the Hail Holy Queen.

Disclaimer: These prayers (with the exception of The Fatima Prayer, which has several Latin translations) were taken and checked by multiple sources. The bulk of the prayers in this series can be found on this website: http://www.traditioninaction.org/religious/b012rpLatin_Rosary.htm

Here's how it will work: I'll put the text of the whole prayer in Latin first, followed by the full English translation. Then, each prayer will be broken down by line. I'll give the Latin first in colored text, then the pronunciation below it in colored italics.

So let's get started!

Symbolum Apostolorum (Apostle's Creed)

Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem, Creatorem caeli et terrae; et in Iesum Christum,
Filium eius unicum, Dominium nostrum; qui conceptus est de Spiritu Sancto,
natus ex Maria Virgine; passus sub Pontio Pilato, crucifixus, mortuus, et septultus;
descendit ad infernos; tertia die resurrexit a mortuis; ascendit ad caelos, sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis; inde venturus est judicare vivos et mortuos.
Credo in Spiritum Sanctum; Sanctum Ecclesiam Catholicam; Sanctorum communionem; remissionem peccatorum; carnis resurrectionem; vitam aeternam. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and buried. He descended into hell, on the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and sits on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Oratio Fatima (Fatima Prayer)

O mi Jesu, dimitte nobis, peccata nostra. Libera nos ab ignibus inferni. Perduc omnes animas in caelum, praesertim maxime indigentes.

Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen)

O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria!

V. Ora pro nobis Sancta Dei Genitrix
R. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, our hope! To thee we cry, oh banished children of Eve. To thee we send up our sighs, mournings and weepings in this vale of tales. Turn then, oh gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after our exile, show onto us, the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Oh clement, oh loving, oh sweet Virgin Mary!

V. Pray for us, oh Holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

There! Now you know most of the basic prayers. In the next post, I'll include the Rosary Meditation Prayer, the Memorare, and the Prayer of St. Michael, which are technically extra prayers that many people add to their rosaries.

Old-fashionably yours,

Catherine

  1. This is amazing! I will definitely have to work on doing this. I'm a bit of a slow learner, but these are so helpful! Thank you!
