How to Say the Rosary in Latin (Part 1)

May 30, 2017

Hey y'all,

Pentecost is very fastly approaching! I can't believe, it seems that Easter was just a short while ago.....

One of the most visible gifts that the Holy Ghost gave to the 11 apostles was the gift of tongues. They could understand and converse in several different languages, including the old Latin which is still spoken in our Extraordinary Form Masses.

As a kid, I had a lot of difficulty understanding the Latin - consquently I'm afraid I developed a hearty dislike of the Latin Rite. I was attending English liturgy more often anyway, so what did it bother?

Until my dad decided to stop attending the local Norvus Ordo church and drag us to attend a TLM (which was an hour from my house) every Sunday when I was around twelve.

Needless to say, I learned to deal with it. As time went on, I grew to gradually love the TLM, and now I prefer it more than anything.

That being said, my understanding of the Latin was next to nothing - until around four years ago.

You see, my BFF/unbiological sister's family decided some time ago to pray the Rosary in Latin (I think it was to help the boys with their Latin prayers for serving, if I remember correctly).

I didn't even know that was possible!

Naturally, they taught me how to say it and I've been saying my daily Rosary in Latin for about a year or so now.

Over the past couple of years of doing that, I suddenly noticed that I could understand a lot more of the liturgy without looking at a Missal. I'm still only able to pick out individual words, though I am getting some phrases down.

So, for this Pentecost, I will pass on my knowledge and hope it gives you the same graces (and more!) that it gave me!

Disclaimer: These prayers were taken and checked by multiple sources. The bulk of the prayers in this series came from this website: http://www.traditioninaction.org/religious/b012rpLatin_Rosary.htm

So, in a Rosary, there are 7-9 different prayers that people say: Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Fatima Prayer, Hail Holy Queen, Rosary Meditation Prayer, The Memorare, Prayer to St. Michael, Prayers for the Pope (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be).

Obviously, that's a lot. Even I had to learn gradually, so I'll do the same here for you.

For this first part, I'll put up the Latin tutorials for the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be. In the second part, I'll put up the Apostles Creed, the Fatima Prayer and the Hail Holy Queen. In the third part, I'll put up the Rosary Mediation Prayer, the Memorare and the Prayer to St. Michael. In the fourth part, I'll include all of the Mystery titles and the Prayers for the Intentions to the Holy Father and some other Intention titles.

Here is how it's going to work: I'll put the text of the whole prayer in Latin first, followed by the full English translation. Then, each prayer will be broken down by line. I'll give the Latin first in colored text, then the pronunciation below it in colored italics.

So let's get started!

I think that's enough Latin lessons for today. I'll be back soon with more Latin rosary prayers!
